Physician, Heal Thyself

Former U.S. defense secretary, Robert Gates, is firing broadsides in his tell-all book  at seemingly every one he dealt with.  One of his targets is Britain where cutbacks imposed on the armed forces by David Cameron have been criticized by Gates for leaving the UK too weak to be America's 'full partner.'

Britain still remains the fourth biggest military spender behind only the U.S., China and Russia. but Gates whines the Brits simply aren't doing enough.

Secretary Gates doesn't seem to want to explain why the U.S. military made such a cock up of its wars in Iraq and Afghanistan even though it fielded all the King's Horses and all the King's Men.  If numbers and firepower mattered so much, just how did a bunch of illiterate Afghan farm boys with Korean-war vintage technology  hand America its ass in Afghanistan?

The fact is that, despite its overwhelming book superiority, the U.S. military hasn't been able to deliver any significant victory since - oh, I don't know - Panama? Grenada?
